Bisbee Tour - 05/04/2012 - 05/06/2012

Pictures now available HERE

We will gather at the Love's truck stop at 7000 W. Sundust Rd. in Chandler. at 08:45 AM on Friday May 4th and we'll depart at 09:00 AM. To get to Sundust Rd., you will want to exit I-10 at Exit 162 (which is also the exit for Firebird Lake and Wild Horse Pass) Turn left (East) to get onto Sundust. The truck stop will be on your right (South) side about a ¼ mile from the interchange. You can fill your fuel tank there if you wish. There is also a restroom, coffee and snacks available.

Due to the timing and logistics of the routing, we have cancelled the side trip to the Titan Missile Silo. I am thinking that sometime next winter when we cannot drive north due to foul weather conditions, we will make a dedicated trip to the missile silo and then a bit further south to Tubac, AZ. This will be an interesting and "different" tour and event for the club.

It's 156 miles from Phoenix to Benson so I estimate Benson will be a stop for a comfort break but it is possible may need to stop sooner, please monitor your club radio for spontaneous announcements. FYI it's 181 miles from Phx to Tombstone and about 205 from Phx to Bisbee. We should arrive in Tombstone at about noon, approximately but it really doesn't matter since we do not have reservations for lunch.

We'll be traveling from the starting point to Tucson and then, Benson, on interstate 10 and then south on highway 80 to Tombstone where we will have lunch and visit the historic town. There are several restaurants in Tombstone, everyone is on their own for lunch and we will establish a time and location for departure. It's approximately another 25 miles south on Hwy 80 to Bisbee so we will arrive in plenty of time to check in, refresh, relax and maybe see some of the town before dinnertime. Everyone is on their own for dinner Friday evening, but we have a group dinner planned for Saturday in the Blue Room room at the Copper Queen at 6 PM. Should you need information for any reason, our contact at the Copper Queen is Kathy and the phone number is 1 520 432 2216.

You can use this Google page to familiarize yourself with points of interest in and around Bisbee.

Please arrive at the start with a full fuel tank, your club radio, this agenda and an Arizona road map. The weather may be cooler at the higher elevations so bring along proper clothing. We are going regardless of weather conditions, the only reasonable possibility would be rain, no big deal!

I have a bit of a dilemma on my hands as I attempt to plan a three day club tour  to Bisbee and Tombstone, Az. This would be a Friday, Saturday and Sunday event. As noted in a previous email the Temecula, CA tour is scratched, for this year anyway. Other than Bisbee, I have no other ideas for a two or three day tour. If we are unable to get the necessary response from the members in the next week or so, it will be too late to book anything in Bisbee and we probably won’t have any extended tour this year.

The “season” for Bisbee tourists ends at the end of April and the rates for everything drop considerably starting May first. We are currently considering May 4th, 5th and 6th for our event and I have discussed some details with the Copper Queen hotel and restaurant. They will give us a $25 discount on the off season rates, per room per night. I planned a group dinner in the Blue Room (private) on Saturday evening and they will waive the otherwise $150 extra fee for that banquet room.

http://www.copperqueen.com/ There is a ton of info on their web page and also at this tourist page for the entire community, quite a few attractions are nearby or right in town http://bisbeearizona.com/

Room Rates  after our discount per night

 full bed  $ 99
queen bed  112
king bed 128
dbl queen 153
special (inquire) 156
Teddy Roosevelt $168

There are other hotels and B&B in the area but the prices I quote above are based upon our group booking at least 10 rooms.

The problem is, that even in the so called off season, they book all 52 rooms well ahead of time so we have to make a decision in the next week or scratch the whole idea. In order to do this I need to know how many of you are interested in attending this event so I can make proper arrangements.  It is not uncommon to get a slow response from some of the members when setting up the average, one day tour but in this case it will mean the difference between going or not going at all because of the lead time required and the commitments that must be made.

Hopefully, you see the underlying message here and will send back a prompt RSVP. I would prefer a definite answer but I suppose we can temporarily work with a few on the “maybe” list if we must. Today is Feb 3rd so the cut off for your RSVP is Fri Feb 16th. I will need to have the list by then so I can make the proper block booking at the Copper Queen and make other arrangements as well.

Your prompt RSVP will be appreciated.

Thanks,
